About the Department:
The Department of English, SKB University started its journey from 23 September 2011. The Department was then run by 8 guest teachers; Prof. S.S. Senapati, Prof. Asit Mahato, Prof. Ajay Ganguly, Prof. Apurba Saha, Prof. Debopam Raha, Prof. Aparajita Hazra, Prof. Ashish Ganguly and Prof. Rahul Chakraborty, Prof. A. Saha being the Co-Ordinator of the Department. At present, the Department has five full time faculty members: Prof. A. Saha, Department-in-Charge, Dr. Aparajita Hazra, Prof. Jati Sankar Mandal, Dr. Anindya Sekhar Purakayastha and Prof. Sambhunath Maji.
The Department of English has been making its way steadily through time. In the three years from its inception, the department has seen students to the heights of success with a good number of First classes on the result sheets each semester.
Vision & Motto:
The Department is interested not only in the academic excellence of the students, but also in their all round development as human beings.
a.Five students from the first batch (2011-13) namely Anindita Chowdhury, Bachchu Karmakar, Priya Ghosal, Richa Biswas and Satyam Raj Saha under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Deboapm Raha and Prof. Apurba Saha presented papers at a State level student workshop on Comparative Literature organised by the Centre for Advanced Study, Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University on 13 Jan 2012. It was the first of its kind by the students of SKB University.
b. Dr Sheila Cavanagh from Emory University, who is also the Director of the prestigious World Shakespeare Project was invited to the Department for an interactive session on Shakespeare Studies. The students demonstrated Performative Arts on Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Sonnets under the guidance of Dr. AparajitaHazra, by making out a collage of Shakespearean tragedies like Macbeth and King Lear. An overwhelmed Dr. Cavanagh filmed the whole performance to be shown at the World Shakespeare Project sessions abroad. She has also mentioned her stint in SKB University in the Website of WSP which is definitely a bright feather in the cap of the department.
c. Prof. Deb Narayan Bandopadhyay, Professor, Dept. of English, Burdwan University and currently the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Bankura University was invited over to the Department of English SKB University, a number of times to take classes on Australian Literature, Dalit Poetry and Shakespearean Drama.
d. Prof. Deb Narayan Banerjee, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Bankura University, Bankura, delivered special lectures on Dalit Literature on 19 & 20 May 2014.
e. The Student Magazine 'Avant-Garde' 2014 was jointly released by Prof. Samita Manna, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, SKB University, Purulia, and Prof. Deb Narayan Banerjee, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Bankura University, Bankura, on 20 May 2014 in the presence of the students and the faculty members at the Auditiorium of the District Science Centre, Purulia.
